ULAK Communication General Manager Ruşen Kömürcü stated that the broadband capacity and low latency enabled by 5G technology allow for remote intervention across different locations and that they are showcasing their new products developed in this field at IDEF 2025.

The 17th International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2025), for which Anadolu Agency (AA) is the “Global Communication Partner,” is being held at the Istanbul Expo Center (IFM), hosted by the Ministry of National Defense, supported by the Presidency of Defence Industries, under the management and responsibility of the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation (TSKGV), and organized by KFA Fuarcılık AŞ.

Responding to questions from an AA correspondent during the fair, ULAK Communication General Manager Kömürcü said that they are participating in IDEF with various scenarios and demos on the industrial use of 5G technologies, which are widely utilized in the defense industry and suited for dual-use applications.

Kömürcü noted that Türkiye is preparing to transition to 5G at the operator level and added, “As a domestic and national communication company, ULAK has developed its own software and hardware for 5G and is now waiting for the tender process to begin.”

“We’re showcasing examples of how 5G technologies are being used across various domains of life”
Kömürcü highlighted that another prominent area of 5G usage worldwide is industrial applications.

He explained that they are demonstrating related examples at the fair and continued:
“With AGV robots and robotic arms integrated with 5G, we’re showing how productivity can increase in industry through remote maintenance. We are presenting examples of how 5G technologies can be used in different sectors such as smart factories, defense, industry, and smart cities. At IDEF, there is also talk of new concepts where unmanned sea, land, and air vehicles operate jointly. At the core of all these is communication. As a critical communication company under the leadership of ASELSAN and HAVELSAN, ULAK develops domestic and national technologies for both civilian sectors and the defense industry.
As part of IDEF, we are showcasing a V2X technology—developed entirely with ULAK’s own R&D—where vehicles communicate with roads. This includes vehicle-mounted units and roadside units that interact through various scenarios. We began installing this system along a 40-kilometer stretch of road in Hasdal, Istanbul, under the leadership of the General Directorate of Highways and TURKSAT. We are displaying both our vehicle-mounted and roadside units and our various use-case scenarios here. Additionally, at the ULAK booth, we are demonstrating the integration of AGV robots, robotic arms, and other equipment with 5G technology for industrial applications.”

“5G’s broadband capacity and low latency make remote intervention across different locations possible”
Ruşen Kömürcü emphasized that the broadband capacity and low latency offered by 5G technology enable remote intervention across different locations, particularly in remote maintenance technologies.

Highlighting the importance of remote intervention, Kömürcü said:
“For example, we are demonstrating a scenario in which a malfunctioning armored vehicle’s engine is remotely intervened in with the help of smart glasses, even if it’s located far from the factory or central facilities. By communicating with the center, various repairs can be carried out remotely. On the other hand, we’re also showcasing a product that integrates 5G with smart equipment in factories, demonstrating how productivity can be improved in an industrial setting.”

Kömürcü noted that their aim is to share with visitors and key industry stakeholders the convenience, broadband capability, and low latency that 5G brings to human life.

He added that it is crucial for ULAK to seize new market opportunities and develop technologies for export, and concluded:
“One of ULAK’s core strengths is its R&D capability. The company is also actively developing technologies for 6G, which is expected to enter use worldwide by 2030, and already holds over 160 patents in this area. ULAK is a company that continuously develops new technologies and offers them as software solutions for both military and civilian sectors. One of ULAK’s prominent products is SD-WAN, a software-based wide area network solution. Currently, SD-WAN is used in Türkiye by the General Directorate of Forestry and by the armed forces in various locations. It provides a secure point-to-point communication solution. ULAK’s SD-WAN has recently achieved significant success in international events and NATO exercises. In the coming days, SD-WAN will be available to all users who want to establish secure and national communications across multiple locations.”
