A Landmark Agreement Between ULAK Communications and Türksat: The Era of Smart Transportation with 5G Begins
At MWC 2025 Barcelona—one of the world’s largest mobile technology events—Türkiye witnessed a significant collaboration in national communication technologies.
With the esteemed presence of the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, ULAK Communications and Türksat Satellite Communications, Cable TV, and Operations Inc. (TÜRKSAT) signed an agreement for the establishment of a 5G private network infrastructure for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS).
The agreement was signed by Türksat CEO Ahmet Hamdi Atalay and ULAK Communications CEO R. Ruşen Kömürcü, Ph.D. This initiative covers the deployment of a 5G-enabled smart transportation infrastructure along a 40-kilometer corridor between Istanbul’s Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport, encompassing 19 sites.
The Smart Transportation Era Begins with 5G
The project aims to integrate smart transportation systems with 5G technology. The 5G private network, to be deployed at 19 strategic locations, will provide end-to-end connectivity with locally developed components, including Base Stations (gNodeB – RAN), Core Network, and Network Management & Monitoring System (NMS).
This infrastructure will enhance Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) communication capabilities, ensuring high-speed, low-latency, and secure data transmission for vehicles and transportation networks.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, ULAK Communications CEO R. Ruşen Kömürcü, Ph.D., emphasized Türkiye’s leadership in national communication solutions, stating:
“This project marks a major milestone in Türkiye’s smart transportation ecosystem. With our 5G private network solutions, we aim to make smart transportation systems safer, faster, and more efficient. Through this collaboration with Türksat, we will implement Türkiye’s first 5G-enabled Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems along one of Istanbul’s most critical transportation corridors, paving the way for the future of urban mobility.”
Türksat CEO Ahmet Hamdi Atalay also highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration for Türkiye’s technological infrastructure, stating:
“With this project, we are taking another step forward in Türkiye’s mobile and communication technologies. By leveraging the capabilities of 5G, we aim to enhance the efficiency of smart transportation systems and strengthen our country’s leadership in global competition. At Türksat, our top priority is to contribute to Türkiye’s digital transformation with national technologies. Through this partnership, we will not only modernize the transportation infrastructure in a key corridor like Istanbul but also set a global benchmark with this pioneering project.”
With the agreement signed at MWC 2025, this project has officially commenced, reinforcing Türkiye’s role in global smart transportation solutions through national communication technologies.
