A New Technological Step in Intelligent Transportation Systems in Türkiye

October 9 | 2025

ULAK Communications has achieved a significant milestone in the field of intelligent transportation systems with a locally developed Roadside Unit (RSU) that successfully established a live connection through a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite simulator for the first time.

Developing domestic and national communication solutions, ULAK Communications demonstrated this technology simultaneously with the rest of the world at the IEEE PIMRC 2025 Conference held in Istanbul.

Within the system integration carried out by engineers from Keysight Technologies, Spark Measurement Technologies Inc., and ULAK Communications, ULAK’s RSU product was connected with Keysight Technologies’ UXM satellite simulator to perform a successful Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) demonstration.

This work showcased not only Türkiye’s advancements in LTE and 5G infrastructures but also the progress achieved in space-based communication integration for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

During the live demo, the RSU device established a direct satellite connection via the NTN simulator in a scenario without terrestrial connectivity, enabling high-speed data transmission with a low error rate.

The demonstration highlighted the potential benefits of non-terrestrial network technologies, especially in rural and remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure is limited, marking one of the most innovative, real-time ITS applications conducted in parallel with global developments.

Discussing the Future of Communication Technologies

Now in its 36th edition, the IEEE PIMRC (International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications) brought together leading academic and industrial representatives in mobile communication technologies in Istanbul.

At the event, ULAK Communications showcased Türkiye’s progress in communication technologies through its exhibition stand, technical sessions, presentations, and panels.

A special panel titled “Enabling Intelligent Transportation Systems with 5G and 6G: From Technology to Policy” featured Dr. Ömer Fatih Sayan, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, as moderator, with panelists including Dr. Ruşen Kömürcü (CEO, ULAK Communications), Prof. Dr. Sinem Çöleri (Koç University), Dr. Sina Alp (Okan University), and Prof. Dr. Tommy Svensson (Chalmers University of Technology).

The panel explored the impacts of 5G and 6G technologies on ITS, safe and autonomous driving, V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication scenarios, and regulatory frameworks.

ULAK’s R&D team members, Dr. Ali Tuğberk Doğukan and Dr. Evren Tuna, engaged with the academic community through their technical papers and session chairmanships. Dr. Erdem Demircioğlu, Director of R&D and Innovation, participated as a speaker in the “AI-Driven Wireless World” panel and delivered an industry-focused presentation.

These contributions reflected the company’s commitment to strengthening its technology development model based on academia–industry collaboration.

Throughout the conference, ULAK’s booth attracted significant interest from both academic and industrial circles. Visitors learned about ULAK’s broad range of technologies, including 5G base stations, 6G development efforts, RSU/OBU solutions, ITS scenarios, and satellite-integrated ITS technologies.
