National Technologies Preparing for 5G

May 5 | 2025

ULAK Communications, which continues field trials of domestic solutions to be used in the transition to 5G technology, will launch 5G service by the end of 2025 by establishing the Smart Transportation Systems infrastructure in the Hasdal region.

TEKNOFEST TRNC, where Anadolu Agency (AA) is the global communication partner, is being held at the old Ercan Airport under the auspices of the Presidency of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), with the main organization led by the Türkiye Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation) and the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and participation from 132 institutions, including public organizations, technology giants, universities, and media outlets.

ULAK Communications took part in the event, showcasing its national communication solutions, products, and capabilities.

The company continues its activities with the vision of developing communication technologies through national products. ULAK Communications provides uninterrupted and secure communication services with 3,130 4.5G base stations deployed across Türkiye.

ULAK Communications General Manager Ruşen Kömürcü spoke to an AA reporter about the efforts carried out on the path toward 5G technology.

Emphasizing their focus on addressing infrastructure and software needs in 5G technology with national communication products, Kömürcü said, “Thanks to our work with industrial enterprises and operators, we continue our field trial tests for the 5G transition without slowing down.”

Kömürcü noted that while continuing field tests as part of LTE modernization in existing commercial sites, they are also conducting necessary technology development activities for the deployment of new 5G sites. He said:

“While our 4.5G + 5G base station field tests are ongoing, we have also started trials of our 5G base stations in closed-loop private networks (Mobile Private Network). By the end of 2025, we will implement 5G service by establishing the Smart Transportation Systems infrastructure in the Hasdal region. This infrastructure includes the installation of 5G-supported smart transportation systems across 19 sites along a 40-kilometer corridor between the Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport. This will enhance communication capabilities between vehicles and transportation infrastructure—Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Network (V2N)—allowing for high-speed, low-latency, and secure data transmission.”

Export Activities to Accelerate

Explaining that they have made international contacts and taken steps toward exporting LTE-A technology, Kömürcü stated that ULAK base stations are actively operating with private network solutions in Tajikistan, Niger, and Sudan. Kömürcü said:

“Today, we are actively operating abroad with our domestic and national communication technologies. Our base stations, which are actively used in Tajikistan, Niger, and Sudan, significantly contribute to regional communication infrastructure. With the advent of 5G technology, we aim to further accelerate our exports, especially to the Turkic states and the African region, through both private network and operator solutions.”

Highlighting that ULAK Communications aims not only to be a communication technology manufacturer but also a globally competitive brand, Kömürcü added:

“We will continue contributing to Türkiye’s technology exports by expanding our international collaborations. In an era where communication security and data privacy are critical, we are determined to make a difference with our national communication products.”
