ULAK Communications Prepares Türkiye for 5G by Upgrading Base Stations

January 20 | 2026

Ruşen Kömürcü, CEO of ULAK Communications Inc., stated that ahead of the transition to the next phase of mobile communications, the company continues its efforts to upgrade existing operator sites to be 5G-ready in cooperation with GSM operators.

Emphasizing that ULAK Communications has systems and 4.5G base stations deployed across all three mobile operators established in Türkiye, Kömürcü noted that the company currently provides local and national communications services to more than 1,500 base stations nationwide.

Highlighting that work on 5G technologies is ongoing, Kömürcü said:
“We are testing our products at sites designated by our operators. Following the 5G tender scheduled for October 16, 2025, Türkiye is set to transition to 5G as of April 1. In the meantime, we are working to replace and upgrade our existing deployed sites within operator networks with 5G-ready infrastructure. At present, testing and acceptance processes are ongoing.”

Kömürcü underlined that once these efforts are completed, both ULAK Communications and the operators will begin offering 5G services as of April 1, adding:

“Subsequently, in line with the operators’ ongoing investment plans, and based on the agreements reached with Turkcell and Türk Telekom during last year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we will continue our efforts to deploy more than 6,500 base stations across operator sites. Once this phase is completed, ULAK Communications will significantly increase its market share within the nearly 100,000 base stations installed across Türkiye. In this regard, we look forward to the continued support of our operators.”

“Procurement processes are ongoing”

Pointing out that ULAK Communications develops all of its software products domestically, nationally, and entirely through its own engineering teams, Kömürcü also noted that the company currently serves as the chair of the Communications Technologies Cluster (HTK), Türkiye’s leading initiative in this field.

Kömürcü stated that HTK held its general assembly meeting last month and formed a new board of directors, adding that their efforts extend beyond ULAK products alone. He emphasized that they are actively working to position not only ULAK’s solutions but also the GSM and 5G products of HTK member companies within operator networks.

Noting that operators and cluster members are frequently brought together through meetings and workshops, Kömürcü offered the following assessment:

“With these products, we have effectively ensured localization within operator ecosystems. In full compliance with the Domestic Goods Communiqué of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, as well as the localization requirements defined by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority in the tender process, we are in a position to offer operators a wide range of domestic and national solutions—from core network components to software—primarily from ULAK Communications and other local companies. In this context, we expect our operators to give HTK member companies the opportunity they deserve. We maintain continuous dialogue with operators and organize regular workshops. Procurement executives from the operators frequently visit ULAK Communications and our member companies. Currently, procurement processes are ongoing.”
